A Well Respected Man

My neighbor is named Msembe. He is an mzee—an elder—in the community and therefore treated with great respect and deference. He is an educated man, trained as an engineer with a previous job at the water treatment plant, and this accords him even more respect. Despite all this, he is most certainly the funniest person here. Don’t mistake me, he is no comedian. He certainly doesn’t clown around and he doesn’t laugh or speak unnecessarily. And yet he is hilarious.

In part, I think he feels responsible for us. He is our landlord and he and his wife were the ones to introduce us to the village when we arrived. They took us around to meet everyone…
